RTD Simulation or Thermal Calibration? Define the Test Scope

Distinguish an RTD electrical-input test from a physical sensor comparison and a combined channel check. Specify what the record actually demonstrates.

Name the part of the chain under test

A useful scope sketch is: actual temperature, probe, transmitter, output, receiving input. Mark where the test stimulus enters and where the result is read. The word calibration on a work order does not identify those boundaries.

Fluke's temperature-simulation explanation distinguishes an electrical substitute from testing the physical sensing element. A simulated RTD signal can test the connected instrument; it does not expose the removed probe to a known temperature.

Three different questions

  • Electrical input test: does the specified instrument respond to the simulated RTD input under the documented configuration? Record the stimulus, input type, connection and observed output.
  • Sensor comparison: what does the actual probe indicate against a temperature reference under the stated test conditions? Beamex describes using a temperature source and reference, with immersion and stabilisation considered.
  • Combined check: which identified sensor, transmitter and receiving-channel portions are included together? Fluke's RTD guide distinguishes a separate sensor check from checking its connected electronics.

Do not relabel one result as another. A successful electrical-input test does not by itself verify a probe, its process installation or the entire control loop. This is a scope-planning guide, not a live wiring or isolation procedure.

Write a short test-boundary statement

For a service request, specify the instrument tag, components included, stimulus point, observation point and excluded components. Attach the applicable sensor curve, input wiring and configured range. Ask the technician to reference the exact instrument and simulator connection instructions; a nominal sensor name is not a terminal diagram.

For a physical comparison, request the source and reference identification, the agreed test points and the setup conditions that support the comparison. Leave unresolved conditions visible in the quotation rather than claiming an acceptance result before testing.

A labelled output-scaling example

Suppose a hypothetical linear channel maps 0 to 100 °C onto 4 to 20 mA. Its ideal output at 60 °C is 4 + 16 × (60 − 0) / (100 − 0) = 13.6 mA.

These are teaching values, not a WESIVO factory setting, tolerance or test result. The arithmetic checks expected scaling only. It does not prove the physical probe was calibrated, determine uncertainty or approve the instrument. The linked scaling guide explains the calculation separately.

Ask for records that match the agreed scope

  • Identify the tested assembly and its configuration at the time of the check.
  • Record applied values, observed values, units and the agreed acceptance basis.
  • List the reference equipment and applicable evidence requested by the owner.
  • Separate the initial results, any authorised adjustment and the subsequent results.
  • State excluded equipment and unresolved findings rather than labelling the whole installation passed.

Keep a separate record of any later sensor or configuration replacement so the earlier evidence remains interpretable. Agree intervals and release decisions with the owner; this article sets no universal frequency or tolerance.

WESIVO selection boundary

Use the TT30E page and original temperature catalogue to discuss the required assembly and output configuration. Send the process and connection details together with the requested test scope and documents. The external calibration examples do not establish a WESIVO self-calibration function, accredited service, automatic certificate or guaranteed loop accuracy.

Discuss your application

Send your medium, operating conditions, connection, output, quantity and destination. WESIVO will review the configuration before quotation.
